If you are a teen girl looking to develop some technology on a small scale (think really small), then Marvel has a challenge for you.
In honor of the upcoming film Ant-Man, the company has issued a challenge for all girls aged 14-18 in grades 9-12 to come up with a piece of micro-technology on their own with "readily accessible and found materials."
"After completing their projects, applicants will be asked to submit a short video demonstrating the projects and explaining how their projects will inspire other girls to pursue interests in science, technology, engineering, or math," states the official website for the Ant-Man: Micro-Tech Challenge. "Micro-technology, such as a Raspberry Pi, can enable tinkerers, makers, builders, and future Imagineers to execute big ideas with an inexpensive base component that fits in a girl's pocket."
Marvel, along with its partners Dolby Laboratories, Visa and Raspberry Pi - will pick its favorite entries and submit those to STEM-based programs in those winning girls' cities. Winners will also get to host their own workshops in their local areas.
Of course, the grand prize is that one winner gets to travel to Hollywood with her parents for the official premiere of Marvel's movie Ant-Man. They'll also get tickets to go to a STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) workshop at Disneyland, as well as get a tour of Walt Disney Studios.
Girls interested in competing in the challenge have until June 11 to submit their ideas, with winners announced on June 16.
Marvel recently released the official announcement trailer for the challenge, featuring actress Evangeline Lilly, who plays Hope Van Dyne, a scientist who helps create the technology seen in Ant-Man, as well as one of the people who trains Ant-man in how to use that tech.
Of course, this is all well and good, especially with Marvel wanting to inspire young women, but that doesn't change the fact that we still don't have a Black Widow movie and the female character has experienced a lot of snubbing by the company in its merchandising, although female fans of the Marvel Avengers franchise have demanded more of the character.
Ant-Man opens in theaters on July 17.
