With monthly subscription streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Insant Video, you might have forgotten that you can actually purchase digital copies of your favorite films to own forever and ever. Or as long as the file remains accessible.
While this practice of buying and downloading movies seems a bit antiquated, 20th Century Fox launched a new app Wednesday that will try to infuse a bit of excitement into the experience.
Movie of the Day, which is now available to download for free on iOS devices, offers discounts of up to 70 percent on movies from the 20th Century Fox catalogue on iTunes. One movie from Fox's collection of approximately 850 titles available on iTunes will be offered in a flash sale for 24 hours, according to Variety. There's even a countdown clock that appears over the movie's poster in the app to really put the pressure on you to buy.
The studio's 2011 hit X-Men: First Class is Movie of the Day's inaugural movie offered up for a discount. The digital HD film is on sale for $6.99 (originally $14.99). Most films will be on sale for between $4.99 and $9.99 in the app.
Each title comes with information about the movie's cast, crew and synopsis as well as user reviews. You can also share your latest acquisition on the social network of your choice, which Variety points out is designed to promote the flash sale. Of course, there's also a link to purchase the movie from iTunes.
20th Century Fox's new app might not be enough to boost its digital HD sales as it competes with the likes of those aforementioned streaming services. But sometimes you just can't resist the thought of having your very own copy of The Sound of Music with which you can sing along to "Do Re Mi" again and again.
