Plenty has been written about Josh Trank's reboot of Fantastic Four for Fox.
There are stories about discord on the set. Rumors that Marvel canceled its Fantastic Four comic book out of spite. It's well known that Fox made the movie only so it keep the rights from reverting to Marvel. And it's still hard, eight years later, to get the taste of Tim Story's Fantastic Four movies out of our mouths.
The odds are stacked against this summer's Fantastic Four, to put it mildly. Everyone seems to expect it to fail. They even want it to.
Why can't anyone just admit that Fantastic Four looks surprisingly good?
MovieTickets.com has posted a couple of new posters and a cute video that provide new glimpses of the team. And sure, we could pick this stuff apart to our hearts' content - like how the first poster uses the exact same "rubble flying everywhere" background that the first Captain America poster did. But let's not.
So why do people want this movie to fail?
It's got a great cast that includes Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Bell. It's based on a beloved comic property that basically created the Marvel Universe. Director Josh Trank may rub some people the wrong way, but there's no denying that Chronicle was incredible. Weta Digital, the company behind the Lord of the Rings trilogy, is doing the visual effects. The track records of everyone involved are impressive, to say the least.
There's just as much going for Fantastic Four as against it. If you didn't know any of its troubled history, wouldn't seeing this stuff get you excited? Our advice: tune out the background noise and focus on what's in front of you, because there's some promising stuff here.
We'll find out how the finished product turns out when the movie opens in theaters on August 7, 2015.
