In November of 2013, a little boy called "Batkid" captured the imagination of the entire world.
You know the story of 5-year-old Miles Scott. For one whole day, San Francisco was Gotham City, and a little boy was a superhero. It was a remarkable phenomenon that blended the power of social media with an outpouring of love, kindness and generosity from the real world.
This summer, Warner Bros. is bringing a documentary called Batkid Begins to theaters. It tells the whole story of how 25,000 strangers — some of whom actually flew into the city for the occasion — and billions more online, united to fulfill the wish of a little boy who'd beaten Leukemia.
The Make-A-Wish Foundation planned the event for Miles Scott, having no idea how his wish would strike a nerve with so many. The movie follows Patricia Wilson and her San Francisco Make-A-Wish team as they're initially overwhelmed at the thought of organizing an event so much more massive than anything they've done before. But as we all know, they rose to the occasion and pulled off something unprecedented.
And if you don't well up at least a little while watching this trailer, you're a robot.
Warner Bros. says besides retelling young Miles' story, the documentarians also wanted to discover why it played out the way it did. Did Miles need the world? Or did the world need Miles?
In addition to numerous individuals involved in the day, Batkid Begins features interviews with celebrities, executives from companies like Apple and Twitter, and many more. How did an event expected to involve the help of a few hundred volunteers grow to tens of thousands, attract the attention of President Obama and every actor to ever wear Batman's cowl?
Batkid Begins tells all in select theaters on June 26, 2015.
