When Dan Uggla smacked a game-winning three-run homer to lift the Washington Nationals to a rallying 13-12 win over the Atlanta Braves on April 28, it called for a celebration.
That's when Nationals pitcher Max Scherzer came out the dugout with a bottle of chocolate syrup in his hands, pouring the gooey contents over Uggla's head in one of the weirdest celebrations we have ever seen in Major League Baseball history.
We've seen the shaving cream or whipped cream pies to the face before ... but never this. And the Nationals have kept their unusual celebration going, bringing it out any time it's warranted, whether a walk-off hit or dominant pitching start.
"Oh, it was just something to top off a good win," Scherzer told ESPN of the ongoing celebration this week. "Chocolate sauce is the perfect topping for ice cream, so might as well top off a game, give that person in the on-field camera interview a little something to taste. It's better than a pie in your face."
What's best about this is Hershey's caught wind of the Nationals' celebrations using its chocolate syrup and sent the team 24 bottles last week and will ship them another 108 on Thursday, also according to ESPN.
Keep the good times flowing.
So, what is it like to have chocolate syrup poured on your head? Uggla relived the experience talking to the Washington Post.
"You know, it just felt like chocolate syrup getting dumped on you," Uggla said. "The only thing it does is it gets in your uniform and your hat and your glove and everything. It's just kind of messy."
Messy, but fun. As long as the Nationals are winning and there's reason to celebrate, we're all for it. The MLB season is a long one ... you have to find ways to stay entertained.
