Netflix Prepping Immersive Web Interface For Debut In June: Here's What We Know So Far

Netflix has confirmed that it will begin rolling out a new user interface for its web interface for all users around the globe starting next month.

The interface was shown off at CES and Mobile World Congress, and brings the web interface much more in line with how users experience Netflix on mobile devices and other streaming devices like Roku.

"I can confirm that we plan to launch the new UI, our first of update since 2011," said Cliff Edwards, Netflix director of corporate communications and technology. "The idea is to provide the same immersive experience you'd get on a TV and to deliver more information about a particular show in one place, in an easy to access way."

Most notably the new interface will ditch the slow, spinning carousel previously found in favor of an interface that expands selections with one simple click, showing more information about particular movies or TV shows. Users will be pleased to hear the news considering the carousel often took a while to load and move.

Despite the changes, some are frustrated that there will now be a smaller selection shown on the screen at one time rather than the multitude of options that was shown previously. The need for some to see more selection on the screen at one time comes shortly after a Netflix hack called "God Mode" enabled users to see the entire Netflix selection on the screen at once without the need to navigate through the interface.

The official launch of the new interface is set for June; however, the rollout has already started for some users according to some reports.

It's important to note that the interface for users of Netflix on devices like Roku, Xbox and PlayStation will largely remain the same over the next few months - of course this isn't necessarily a bad thing as it is an interface that has largely been well received by users.

Netflix also recently made an announcement regarding how it handles data and personal information. The company said that it will slowly begin encrypting all web traffic that it handles over the next few years, a move that will put the more privacy and security aware among us at ease. It is also expected that the company will attempt to enter the Chinese market in the near future; however, Netflix itself has not made any announcements regarding these rumors. Rumors suggest that this entrance will take place in partnership with Alibaba founder Jack Ma.
