Twitter buys Cover Android lockscreen app - What does this mean for the app?

Twitter is definitely gearing up for something big. The micro-blogging site has been very busy this year, adding new functions to its apps, redesigning its website and acquiring interesting companies left and right. The latest company to find itself linked to Twitter is Cover, the makers of the customizable Android lockscreen app.

Cover announced that Twitter will acquire the company and that the Cover team will now work closely with Twitter to develop something new and even more awesome. The terms of the deal and Twitter's plans for Cover were not revealed. The little we do know comes exclusively from Cover.

"Twitter, like Cover, believes in the incredible potential of Android," the Cover team wrote on its blog. "They share our vision that smartphones can be a lot smarter -- more useful and more contextual -- and together we're going to make that happen. We'll be building upon a lot of what makes Cover great, and we're thrilled to create something even better at Twitter."

Cover arrived on the lockscreen app scene in October and quickly amassed a large and loyal following. Although Twitter is still a lot more well-liked than Facebook, Cover was prepared for the inevitable question: What will happen to the Cover app after Twitter takes over?

"So what does this mean for the Cover app?" the company wrote in its post. "For now, Cover will remain available in the Play Store while we focus our attention on our work at Twitter. If that changes down the road, we'll provide another update here."

In the meantime, the Cover team will work one on one with Twitter to design something new and different. Twitter is expected to make a bigger push into mobile and who better than Cover to help the company figure out what will appeal to Android users? Cover is, after all, one of the most popular lockscreen apps on the Play store.

Neither Twitter nor Cover is telling us much yet, but what ever it is that they are hiding, it's probably going to be good.
