'Doctor Who' Spin-Off 'Torchwood' Returns As Audio Drama

After the last season of Torchwood, which aired on Starz, it seemed that the spin-off series of Doctor Who might never return.

And, although there's still no word if Torchwood will ever return to TV, fans of the show got some good news recently when John Barrowman, who starred as Captain Jack Harkness on the series, announced on his radio show that Torchwood would return as a Big Finish audio drama series.

Torchwood is a spin-off series of Doctor Who which premiered on television in 2006. Its story revolved around a super secret agency called Torchwood that deals with alien threats caused by an interdimensional rift that runs through Cardiff, Wales. At the head of that agency was the immortal Harkness, a character who also spent time in the TARDIS with the Doctor on Doctor Who. The Torchwood series was meant as a more mature show for adult fans of Doctor Who and ran for four seasons (with its last season moving to the U.S. for its airing on Starz.)

The new audio adventures will focus on different members of the Torchwood team, with the first series focusing on Harkness. You can expect the first adventure, "The Conspiracy," later this year.

"Torchwood has been to the Moon, and America, and the Himalayas, but now I think it's finally coming home, to the brilliance of Big Finish," says Torchwood creator Russell T. Davies.

Big Finish is a company that is no stranger to audio adventures, having made a name for itself for its original Doctor Who stories, along with stories from other franchises, such as Dark Shadows, Blake's 7 and The Avengers (not the Marvel superheroes, but the British spies). Fans of those series spend much of their hard-earned money on their audio adventures, knowing they can expect something that's up to par with the live-action shows.

Expect additional Torchwood cast member announcements for the Big Finish audio adventures later this year.

"Our mission is to bring a whole new series of dramatic adventures to life," says executive producer Nicholas Briggs. "We're starting off with these more intimate, focused releases and will then move on to bigger casts and even wider scope."

The first chapter in the new Torchwood story, "Torchwood: The Conspiracy," will be released in September, 2015 with five more monthly adventures following that. You can pre-order all six chapters now on the Big Finish official website.
