Users who now have the LG Watch Urbane around their wrists could head to the Google Play Store to download the LG Call app, which will allow them to place voice calls from the LG Watch Urbane.
The LG Watch Urbane, one of the better Android smartwatches in terms of looks and specifications, was recently launched for sale in the Google Store for the price of $349. The first units are now finding their way to the first batch of customers who ordered the smartwatch.
Because the LG Watch Urbane does not feature cellular connectivity, the app will basically function as a bridge between the device and the Android-powered smartphone that the smartwatch is connected to.
In addition to tapping on the app's icon on the LG Watch Urbane, LG Call can be accessed by the user saying "open call" to the smartwatch. The app supports all Android smartphones powered by Android 4.3 Jelly Bean or higher.
The LG Call app shows the user's most recent calls made and their favorite contacts. The app also features a dial pad for making calls, with the entire app featuring a stylish and modern user interface.
For users who are looking to make their voice calls without having to go through their smartphones, the function will be enabled for the upcoming LG Watch Urbane LTE version. The particular model of the smartwatch will feature LTE connectivity, but it has not yet been released in the United States. The LG Watch Urbane LTE has been released in LG's home country of South Korea at a price of about $589.
The LG Call app currently works only with the LG Watch Urbane. The app should also theoretically be compatible with the two previous smartwatches that LG has released, namely the square-bodied LG G Watch and round-bodied LG G Watch R, but, as of now, the app does not work with these devices. Whether the LG Call app will be updated to work with the earlier LG smartwatches is not yet known.
The LG Watch Urbane has a 1.3-inch P-OLED screen that is similar to the LG G Watch R, allowing users to easily read the screen even when under intense sunlight. The smartwatch packs a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor that is supported by 512MB of DDR2 RAM and built-in storage of 4GB.
