Samsung Galaxy S6 And S6 Edge Users Report Inefficient RAM Management

There's a saying when it comes to hot weather: it's not the heat, it's the humidity. Well, when it comes to the Samsung Galaxy S6 and Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge it's not the lack of RAM on the smartphones, its RAM management driving some smartphone owners a bit crazy these days.

Apparently, there is a RAM (random access memory) glitch that is driving users a bit bonkers as apps are quitting in a proactive way to keep RAM use down despite the fact that there is plenty of RAM to go around and the smartphones are boasting less software bloat than past handset versions.

To see the issue in motion, here is a video in which the Samsung Galaxy S6 is put up against two competing handsets in an unofficial test of running apps and RAM management responses.

As one user notes in a XDA developers discussion thread on the issue: "Bloat or no bloat, it's incomprehensible to me how you can't even have three apps running on a phone with 3 GB of ram. My OPO could easily have six or more apps running at the same time," writes Fruktsallad.

As another Samsung S6 Edge user relates, apps such as Facebook and WhatsApp, which typically stay in memory with ease on handsets boasting just 2 GB RAM, take some time loading as the S6 keeps shutting them down and the same issue happens with Chrome-based browsing. The Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge boast DDR4 RAM technology and 3 GB RAM.

The debate among users seems to be whether the RAM management glitch is an issue or bug with the handset or with Android 5 Lollipop working way too hard at keeping RAM freed up.

As Samsung has been made aware of the issue, given users' feedback and the fact that there has yet to be any official statement or announced fix in the works, some Samsung Galaxy S6 owners are sharing work-around tips in the meantime.

One obvious tip is to avoid RAM-hogging apps and to kill misbehaving apps. Another is to grab a task management app, such as Watchdog Task Manager, to help keep apps running and speedy while a fix arrives from Samsung or Android or both.
