While a quick shower and shave may be the go-to routine for most men, using the right products can make a world of difference. And, it may even shave minutes off time spent getting ready, a bonus on busy mornings.
According to Devin Toth, hairstylist at Salon SCK located in New York City, simplicity is key in breaking down grooming tips and personal care products to male clients. We spoke to Toth to get his advice on men's grooming habits.
"It's not hard to convince male clients to take better care of themselves," says Toth. "Whether it's a product or a routine, just give them directions and explain the results." Toth provides his recommendations in easy to understand language and shares which multifunctional products can save time.
"A lot of men don't actually care about how a product smells, feels or even why and how it works, as long as it's easy and delivers excellent results," says Toth.
Here, Toth offers three tips for easy and effective men's grooming.
1. Use a two-in-one shampoo and conditioner to save time while showering. "The average man should use one that cleanses and conditions their hair at the same time because they don't want to spend the extra time in the shower for conditioner," says Toth. These types of products clean and soften hair simultaneously.
2. Try a deep cleaning facial product. "This should always be used on your face before you shave to prevent ingrown hairs," Toth explains. "It will remove the dead skin cells that could otherwise trap your facial hair beneath the skin." A kit like the Rituals Samurai perfect shave ($25, www.rituals.com) ensures a close, smooth shave, inspired by the ancient samurai warrior who was always groomed before going to battle.
3. Choose a styling product for hair that can create different looks. Toth likes Shu Uemura shape paste sculpting putty ($38; 2.5 fluid ounce). "This is great for your hair because this one product can create soft, natural looks or controlled, clean looks depending on how much you use. I recommend using twice as much for work as you do on your weekend."
