When Marvel's Daredevil was first announced as a Netflix exclusive, most fans' minds went straight to the 2003 abomination starring Ben Affleck. They were understandably concerned: the first attempt to bring the Man without Fear to the big screen was an utter disaster, and while everything about the Netflix reboot looked solid, there was no way of knowing whether or not it would be any better.
Thankfully, it was: Marvel's Daredevil has been a huge hit so far, and the series has only been available for just about two weeks. This isn't the misguided, backwards, confused mess that was the 2003 version: Daredevil is a grim, gritty look at the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
It's also packed with an insane amount of detail, which made the show feel at home within the larger MCU. Daredevil boasts an insane amount of secrets and Easter eggs for hardcore Marvel fans to find.
It wasn't long before someone started gathering them all up - so, if you don't want to watch Daredevil three or four times in a row, you can just watch Mr Sunday Movies' video:
Everyone knew that Daredevil would borrow heavily from Frank Miller's The Man Without Fear storyline, but the attention to detail is ridiculous. Sure, the black improvised suit is immediately recognizable, but even Murdock's casual clothes are faithfully recreated in the first episode of the series.
What's more intriguing are the numerous ties with ABC's Agents of SHIELD. Apparently, Skye and Murdock grew up at the same orphanage, and the Absorbing Man was the one to take on Murdock's father in the ring. In terms of connections to the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe, it's revealed that Hell's Kitchen (the neighborhood which Murdock operates out of) is in dire straits due to the Chitauri attack at the end of The Avengers, and Ben Urich covered that attack and the battle between Bruce Banner and the Abomination from the finale of The Incredible Hulk. Even the same fake news station seen throughout all of Marvel's movies gets a nod throughout the series.
It's clear that Daredevil was made by comic book fans for comic book fans - all of the little nods and Easter eggs prove that the team behind the project truly love the world and the characters that inhabit it. With any luck, the second season of Daredevil will be just as great as the first.
