It seems like nothing is going to be slowing Sony down any time soon. The PlayStation 4 has broken a number of different sales records and the console isn't even two years old yet. It's the clear frontrunner in the current console war, and its competition - the Xbox One and the Wii U - aren't even close to catching up.
Sony did a masterful job of marketing the console before release, touting it as a true gaming system instead of an entertainment center or kid's toy, and it's clear that the message resonated with consumers.
As a result, the PlayStation 4 has been the best-selling console for most of its lifespan, with the Xbox One only managing to dethrone it late last year. That didn't last long, however, as the PlayStation 4 was back at the top of the charts in February, and that trend continues here: Sony's latest machine was the top-selling video game console in March.
Sony Computer Entertainment (via IGN) was obviously excited:
"We are truly honored PlayStation 4 is the top selling console and #1 in software sales again according to NPD sales data for March 2015...PS4 remains the cumulative sales leader both globally and in the United States and we want to thank gamers worldwide for their ongoing support."
Earlier this month, it was revealed that the PlayStation 4 had already sold over 20 million units, with its closest competitor - Microsoft's Xbox One - currently sitting around half of that.
That's not to say that Sony's competition isn't doing well: both Nintendo and Microsoft saw big improvements with their year-over sales, and it seems like the Xbox One may finally be starting to close the gap between it and the PlayStation 4. That being said, the PlayStation 4 has a 10-million-unit lead; the Xbox One probably won't be the king of the consoles any time soon.
Of course, 2015 could prove to be a difficult year for the PlayStation 4: with Uncharted 4: A Thief's End being pushed back until next year, Sony doesn't really have all that much in terms of exclusive, triple-A titles. If Microsoft can capitalize, that sales gap could start to close pretty quickly...
Either way, expect to see more about Sony's 2015 plans at this year's E3 in June.
