'Never Gonna Give You Up' Performed On Floppy Drives Is Pure Internet

It's one of the oldest jokes on the web: clicking a video believing it to be one thing, and then it turns out to be the music video for Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up."

We've all been there. Rickrolling is an Internet tradition at this point. We are all sick of it to some extent, but when Astley's powerful, smooth voice takes us by surprise yet again, it's hard not to crack a smile — especially when the execution is as perfect as in the video below.

The setup: a user by the name The_Reckonist posted a video titled "Niki Minaj - Anaconda on Eight Floppy Drives" to Reddit's r/videos on April 1. Sounds interesting, right? Who wouldn't want to hear Minaj's magnum opus performed by outdated computer hardware? It's a sure click.

The video starts off completely like you would expect. A computer monitor shows the beginning of Minaj's "Anaconda" music video and all is well. Life makes sense. There is order in the universe.

Then comes the troll, followed by Rick Astley's smug face. That's when the floppy drives kick in with a chorus of buzzes and scratches to create the most unique take on rickrolling yet.

It's a cool video in and of itself. To transform floppy disc drives into musical instruments is no easy task to begin with. But the person behind this video took it one step further with an April Fools' Day prank that caught more than a few people by surprise.

Reddit users who clicked the video aren't even mad. "I actually prefer it this way," wrote one user, with another saying they've been jamming to "Never Gonna Give You Up" since it came out in 1987.

That's great and all, but can we hear "Anaconda" now? I'm still curious.
