Android 5.0.1 Lollipop is finally coming to LG G3 smartphones on the T-Mobile network.
The update for the LG G3 into the latest of Google's mobile operating system entered into the testing phase for T-Mobile last week, with the update now being released to users.
However, the update to Android 5.0.1 Lollipop will not be an over-the-air update that many users have been accustomed to, wherein they simply download the update and then install it using only the smartphone itself.
LG G3 users under the T-Mobile network will need to use the Mobile Support Tool of LG to get Android Lollipop running on their smartphones.
The LG Mobile Support Tool can be downloaded from the LG Help Library, which details the steps required to use the software properly. The tool should be downloaded to a desktop computer that runs Windows 2000 or later with 9GB of hard disk memory available and a high-speed Internet connection.
Users should then connect their LG G3 to the desktop computer before hitting the Start Upgrade button on the LG Mobile Support Tool. The steps of the upgrade process include Analysis, Download, Update and Complete.
Once the update is completed, the software will inform the user, at which point the Exit button can be clicked on to return to the tool's main screen. The user should then wait for the LG G3 to power itself back on and connect once again to the LG Mobile Support Tool. If the version number of the smartphone is Software D85110r, the upgrade has been successful. The smartphone can then be disconnected from the desktop computer.
It is unclear on how long the Android 5.0.1 Lollipop update for the T-Mobile LG G3 will only be available through the LG Mobile Support Tool, but it is great to see LG giving its users with an early option to update to the latest version of the mobile operating system without having to wait for T-Mobile to push it out over-the-air to the devices.
While the update has not yet been given a go signal by T-Mobile to be rolled out wirelessly, its entry into the testing phase would mean that Android 5.0.1 Lollipop will be pushed out over-the-air soon. Users that are not willing to do the extra steps required to install the latest operating system using the LG Mobile Support Tool could just wait for T-Mobile's official announcement of the update.
