For the WWE Universe, WrestleMania is one of the best events of the year. For the WWE itself, WrestleMania is likely a logistical nightmare.
Even before the pyrotechnics, the lights, the schedule and the stadium itself are all taken care of, the WWE has to worry about the matches themselves, and just getting them together is a challenge.
There's a lot that can derail a match, and it can come out of no where - as such, there are plenty of WrestleMania matches that were supposed to happen, but never did. In its latest 'Five Things' video, the WWE looks back at the greatest WrestleMania moments that almost happened.
Frankly, it's weird to see so many of these moments not happening, given how much impact they could have had. Sure, a 10-man tag team match probably wouldn't have shaken the foundation of the WWE, but the idea of John Cena debuting at WrestleMania XIX - the same event that saw Stone Cold Steve Austin and the Rock battle it out for the last time - is just plain bizarre.
It would have been two separate eras overlapping one another in a much bigger sense, but it just wasn't meant to be. Take a look at WWE's picks in the video below:
It's also strange to think that the Rowdy Roddy Piper/Golddust match - a match that was one of the strangest/best in either athlete's career - almost never happened. This was back when WWE was losing some of its biggest stars to the WCW, and the fact that one of the year's best matches came out of another man leaving the company seems completely backwards...and yet, somehow appropriate.
These days, WWE is pretty conservative when it comes to announcing WrestleMania matches - the company doesn't want to risk sticking its foot in its mouth and canceling a big match. Basically, if the Undertaker wasn't ready to wrestle at this weekend's WrestleMania 31, the company wouldn't have even mentioned his name a few weeks back. That being said, back in the day, things were different - and what could have been some of the best WrestleMania moments ever simply never happened.
WrestleMania will air March 29 on the WWE Network (for only $9.99, of course).
