The WWE has no shortage of documentaries under its belt — nearly every one of its major Superstars has some form of a film about them.
However, most of these documentaries are done "in-universe." That means the stories and feuds in the ring are treated as authentic, rather than the spectacle they really are.
Plenty of fans want to know what it's like outside the ring, but until now, there hasn't been a way to show it.
That's where ESPN comes in. The sports network has just released the first trailer for "WWE: Behind the Curtain," which could provide the best behind-the-scenes look WWE fans have ever gotten.
For the most part, it seems that "Behind the Curtain" will focus on WWE's developmental division, NXT. This is where new wrestlers develop their characters, work on finishing moves and try to start cultivating a following - basically, it's the WWE's proving grounds.
There are still questions about how legitimate the documentary will be. We're not expecting the people in charge to lie about what they're going to do and how they're going to do it, but pro wrestling isn't exactly known for realism.
CEO Vince McMahon prefers that fans see the entertainment side of things, not the business side — but "Behind the Curtain" is being advertised as the latter. Whether or not the WWE will be totally honest about what goes on when the cameras aren't rolling remains to be seen, but it will be a welcome change from the rest of the company's catalog.
Oh, and a few big cameo appearances can't hurt, either.
Thankfully, it won't be long before wrestling fans get to see the documentary for themselves. "WWE: Behind the Curtain" will debut on May 5.
