It's been a few issues since we last saw Cassie Cage and Jacqui Briggs. The two women were kidnapped for unknown reasons by soldiers of Kotal Khan (including Kano) and were last seen being marched through the forest.
While this issue doesn't elaborate on the reasons behind their abduction, Cassie and Jacqui once again take center stage in a violent issue that is more than deserving of the name Mortal Kombat.
The action plays out as an extended flashback, as Johnny, Sonya and the rest of the search party stumble upon a wounded Erron Black. Black may have been in possession of the girls, but he seems to have good intentions, even if he has yet to explain why exactly Kotal Khan is interested in the daughters of Johhny Cage and Jax Briggs.
Black recalls a standoff between the Black Dragon and Black's men that results in a blood-soaked battle in the jungle. Cassie and Jacqui take advantage of the confusion and attempt to escape, only to be caught up in the battle themselves. Thankfully they are more than capable of handling their own in a fight.
It's an action-packed issue that comes complete with several great characters moments as well. Johnny is his usual annoying self, while D'Vorah creeps out Sonya with her eating habits. Kano steals much of the show this week in his battle with the Black Dragon, showing just how cunning and ruthless he can be. The art in issue #12 is also on-point. From gruesome fatalities to shocked facial expressions, artist Dexter Soy turns in some of his best work to date here.
My only complaint is that the story doesn't move forward quite enough for my liking. After all, this issue is mostly a flashback to a battle we never saw the conclusion of. Cassie and Jacqui are still prisoners, Johnny and Sonya are still on their trail. Hopefully the two parties come together sooner rather than later, as this series is much stronger when it attempts to tell one story at a time, rather than jumping between characters every issue.
