Last week, some of the world's most brilliant minds gathered in Vancouver, Canada for TED2015, TED's annual week-long conference where speakers in disciplines ranging from the arts to technology to politics share their revolutionary ideas in the hopes of enlightening us all and maybe even making the world a better place.
You've probably already heard a little bit about what went down at this year's conference. Monica Lewinsky grabbed headlines after she took the stage for her TED Talk last Thursday where she discussed our culture of public shaming and how to put an end to it. In addition to Lewinsky, TED2015 attendees heard from everyone from Bill Gates to transhumanist Martine Rothblatt to performance artist Marina Abramovic. The amount of brain power gathered in one room last week would blow your mind.
However, if you weren't able to jet off to Vancouver and you're not sure whether or not you should shell out any money to watch the conference in full through TED Live, don't fret. There are three TED Talks, including Lewinsky's, currently available online for you to watch in full. Watch them below, and then head over to the TED2015 website to check out all of the highlights from this year's conference.
Monica Lewinsky: "The price of shame"
In 1998, the news of Lewinsky's affair with President Bill Clinton broke online, making the former White House intern the self-described "patient zero" for the kind of online public shaming we have unfortunately grown so accustomed to today. Fast forward about 17 years, and Lewinsky is now breaking her silence on the devastating impact Internet shaming had on her life. Using her personal experiences and high-profile examples of public shaming, from Rutgers University freshman Tyler Clementi committing suicide after his roommate secretly filmed and shared his intimacy with another man to the celebrity nude photo hacking incident last summer, Lewinsky hopes that we put an end to a culture that seems to thrive off of the humiliation of others.
Joseph DeSimone: "What if 3D printing was 100x faster?"
In addition to Lewinsky, Joseph DeSimone's TED Talk at TED2015 was also all over the news last week. DeSimone, the CEO of Carbon3D, presented his company's new approach to 3-D printing inspired by the 1991 movie Terminator 2: Judgment Day. In his TED Talk, DeSimone walks the audience through this new 3-D printing process, which is 25 to 100 times faster than traditional 3-D printers, and why it's going to revolutionize manufacturing in the future.
David Eagleman: "Can we create new sense for humans?"
There's a lot in this world that we don't see, but it doesn't have to be that way. Neuroscientist David Eagleman demonstrates how technology can help humans heighten their senses and even use ones they never knew they had.
