Google has reportedly discontinued the popular Nexus 5 and has made the device unavailable for purchase at the Google Nexus page. The company has decided to put the device into oblivion in order to focus more on the new Nexus 6.
Google hinted in the past that it will stop selling the Nexus 5 sometime in the first quarter of 2015. While its disappearance is not about to happen as a sudden occurrence, the only ones that consumers can get hold of are the last remaining units available with the retailers and the device's carrier partners.
In the past year, it was reported that Google had ceased production of their current handset and will just wait until they run out of stocks before finally bidding it goodbye. According to Google, the smartphone will "continue to be available for sale on Google Play and through select retailers in Q1 2015."
There was a time when consumers had to search for the Nexus 5 at other retailing sites such as eBay. In a previous report from Tech Times, Google had brought back the device to its Play Store for an undetermined period of time. At the Play Store, the device came in 16GB and 32GB versions and was sold at $349 and $399 respectively.
Launched in 2013, the Nexus 5 was touted as Google's "ultra-cheap" and "ultra-great" smartphone. Some of the well-loved features of the device include a 4.95-inch 1080x1920 display, 2300mAh battery, 8MP rear camera, 1.3MP front camera, Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 at 2.26GHz CPU and Adreno 330 at 450 MHz GPU.
"While some inventory of Nexus 5 still exists, our focus is on the Nexus 6 at this time," said Google.
This means that consumers can only have the Nexus 6 as their sole choice for a premium Nexus model now that the Nexus 5 may soon find its way in a gadgets museum.
The Nexus 6, Google's newest flagship smartphone, is now the company's apple of the eye. That could be a much bigger eye since the Nexus 6 is said to feature a pixel-rich, 6 inch Quad HD display. Google boasts that with such size, the device is perfect for doing serious work, playing games, and streaming videos.
There's also an added boost when it comes to the device's CPU and GPU features. The Nexus 6 will reportedly sport a Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 quad-core 2.7GHz processor that will allow unbelievably fast multi-tasking and Adreno 420 GPU for brilliant graphics. Other features include 3GB RAM, a pair of front-facing speakers, 3220mAh battery and 13MP camera.
