New BBM update will bring more goodies, BlackBerry promises

The popular messaging service from BlackBerry - BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) - is set to pack in more goodies soon.

On Friday, February 28, BlackBerry revealed that it is gearing up to bring several new features for BBM. BlackBerry's move seems targeted at attracting new users and retaining existing ones in a bid to thwart competition from other messaging platforms like WhatsApp.

Recently, BlackBerry updated BBM app to version 2.0 and introduced new features like BBM Voice and BBM Channels. Now, the Canadian company is set to bring more enhancements users' way.

"With millions of you depending on BBM to connect with your most important contacts, we want to provide the best messaging experience possible," said Jeff Gadway, head of product and brand marketing for BBM, in an official BlackBerry blog post. "So, we're taking your feedback and we're trying to knock it out of the park by bringing new features and improvements to BBM on a regular basis."

So what are the new features and enhancements that new version of BBM is set to bring? For starters users will be able to send a picture to multiple friends at the same time via group chat. This feature has been available on rival messaging apps for sometime and BBM users will soon benefit from the same.

What's more, BBM will also support sending of files that are up to 16MB in size. Currently, the size limit for BBM is a mere 6MB.

"While our file size limit on shared files has historically been set at 6MB, we're increasing this to 16MB in the next release of BBM. What this means is that you'll be able to send bigger pictures, larger documents and longer videos," revealed Gadway.

This bump up in file size will enable users to send 16 second HD video files, compared to the previous 16-second limit.

BlackBerry has also taken into consideration customer preferences and feedback and will now increase the size of the emoticons as well.

All these new features for BBM are anticipated to be available for all platforms the messaging service supports i.e. Android, iOS, BlackBerry OS and Windows Phone.
