A Look Back At 75 Years Of The Flash

Several superheroes have been celebrating birthdays lately. Superman has had his turn. Batman just celebrated last year. Captain America's is coming up in 2016.

This year, it's the 75th anniversary of the Flash. Throughout numerous incarnations — Jay Garrick, Barry Allen and Wally West among them — Flash has always lived up to his moniker as "the fastest man alive." He speeds in to save the day and defeat the bad guys, usually moving faster than the human eye can see. He does this thanks to a mysterious energy field called the Speed Force.

To celebrate the Scarlet Speedster's 75th anniversary, DC Entertainment has put together a nifty video that shows off 75 different visual interpretations of the birthday boy. From his origins in 1940 to the "New 52" present day, you'll see all sorts of Flashes, and they cycle through at high speed. Because of course.

Many legends of comic book artistry are represented in this video, and it's quite a blast to see all those versions of the Flash. Most of them are so similar, yet so unique. And then there are the more bizarre versions. We noticed a fat Flash, a zombie Flash, a silver Flash, a cowboy Flash and several others. No love for the CW's TV series, though. Guess it's still too new.

Perhaps the most intriguing factor is how each Flash is a reflection of his era. The earliest versions of the character from the 1940s is bright-colored and smiling, clearly an icon of the optimism indicative of the Golden Age of comics. Fast forward to the '90s, and you'll see darker reds and an angrier, more angsty Flash.

Who's your favorite Flash?
