The Inhumans are looking like Marvel's next big property.
When last we left them, the Inhumans had destroyed their city Attilan, which spread their powers-activating Terrigen Mists across the entire Earth. Regular humans with dormant Inhuman genes were mutated suddenly, turning them into Inhumans with powers and strange physical features.
The Inhuman population exploded, and the future of their race took a wild turn.
Following his controversial decision to destroy Attilan (there was this whole thing with Thanos attacking the city, long story), Black Bolt decides to strike out on his own in a new series coming this April called Uncanny Inhumans. It kicks off in a prelude #0 issue, which sets the stage for what's to come. Why would Black Bolt abandon his people and his wife, Medusa, at such a crucial point in their history?
That mystery will play out over the coming series, but one thing we know for sure is that Black Bolt will be going up against a major Marvel villain: Kang the Conqueror. But if there's one Marvel superhero who can take on Kang all by himself, it should be Black Bolt. It's been said before that he may be the most powerful hero in the Marvel universe, as his voice carries incredibly destructive power. A mere whisper from him can level an entire mountain. (Needless to say, he rarely speaks.)
Uncanny Inhumans is written by Charles Soule and drawn by Steve McNiven, the same creative team that did the Death of Wolverine series. Marvel's doing a whole slew of variant covers for this one (including one featuring Howard the Duck for some reason), with contributions from Simone Bianchi, Jim Cheung, Siya Oum, Jerome Opena, Mike Perkens and Christian Ward.
The elephant in the room is Secret Wars, Marvel's universe-rebuilding event that starts in May. Marvel's promotional materials for Uncanny Inhumans never once mentions Secret Wars or its setting, Battleworld, but with issue #1 arriving at the same time that Secret Wars begins, there's no way it can just be ignored. Especially since we know that Attilan is one of the regions of Batteworld.
Here's Marvel's logline for Uncanny Inhumans #0.
The stoic Inhuman king, able to level mountains with a whisper has struck out on his own — seemingly leaving his Queen and his very race to fend for themselves. But is that the whole story? Now, follow his adventures as he embarks on a new mission. A lone wolf and a king without a throne, Black Bolt's endeavors will send him on a direct collision course with one of the Avengers' greatest foes: Kang the Conqueror! With the mastery of time at his very fingertips, Kang will bend the entire 20,000 years of Inhuman history to his own vile ends.
With Kang cut loose, the silent sentinel of the Inhuman Nation is all that stands in his way. Will the Inhuman king rise in the face of growing threats to his people? Or will he fall? Find out when the secrets of Black Bolt's journey comes to light in UNCANNY INHUMANS #0 — on sale in comic shops and on digital devices this April!
