Motorola to launch own smartwatch in 2014 to compete with the Samsung Galaxy Gear 2

It is clear that the smartwatch market is slowly becoming the next heated battleground and Motorola has no intention to be left behind. Motorola announced at Mobile World Congress that it is planning its very own smartwatch for this year and that the device will solve real user problems instead of being just a pretty face for show.

Motorola's interest in the smartwatch market was first revealed during a question and answer session on Twitter, where it claims the device will address battery life and issues facing consumers.

"We are working on a watch that will be available this year. We aim to address consumer issues like style & battery life," said Motorola Mobility on Twitter.

At the moment, it is not certain if the smartwatch will be unveiled while the Motorola is still under Google's influence, or when the company is fully owned by Lenovo. Whatever happens though, Motorola will be making a significance push into a market that is getting increasingly crowded.

Motorola's smartwatch might do away with the ugly design we've seen from several manufacturers, including Samsung. In a statement at MWC, vice president of products, Rick Osterloh, gave the impression that Motorola's smartwatch will have a design that is pleasing to the eyes.

"Right now, there are no wearable products you actually want to wear, and it's because they're all extremely ugly," said Osterloh.

This isn't the first time Motorola has been working on a smartwatch, if rumors are to be believed. Past reports have claimed that Motorola was working on a smartwatch device for Google, and it should have been launched in 2013. However, that plan did not materialize, and now Google is selling Motorola to Lenovo.

It is possible that the company might use some of the ideas it had for the Google smartwatch, but hopefully Motorola stays clear of the design we've seen in leaked images.

As of now, the smartwatch market is getting increasingly competitive and many big-name companies are rumored to be launching devices in 2014.

The Apple iWatch is a popular rumor and there is also the rumored Surface smartwatch from Microsoft that is slated for a 2014 launch.
