Konami Outs 'Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain' PlayStation 4 Special Edition

A limited-edition PlayStation 4, with a Metal Gear Solid V theme, will arrive somewhere around the time Hideo Kojima releases what may be the last entry into his decades-old stealth action game.

The special edition PlayStation 4 draws inspiration from the man, the legend, Solid Snake. The console's plum color mimics Snake's bionic arm and the accompanying gamepad, dressed in gun metal and hero's logo, draws inspiration from his right hand.

Right now, there's no indication that the special edition PlayStation 4 will be available outside of Asian market. However, a collector's edition of the game itself will be available when Metal Gear Solid V launches on Sept. 1 on everything except PC -- the PC version will arrive two weeks later.

The collector's edition will come inside an exclusive black box. The kit will include a copy of the game, a behind-the-scenes Blu-Ray, a map, a collectible steelbook and a half-scale replica of Snake's bionic arm.

The $100 collector's edition of the game will also include a battle pack of digital goods: a Weapon & Shield Pack, a collection of cardboard boxes, costumes, Venom Snake emblem, Metal Gear Online (MGO) XP boost, an MGO and two MGO online weapons.

The special edition PlayStation 4 and collector's edition boxes may not have their value diminished by future iterations of the Metal Gear Solid series. The Phantom Pain appears to be the final installment in the franchise.

Hideo Kojima, Metal Gear Solid creator, has always stated that The Phantom Pain will be the last installment in the franchise. He said the games he has produced -- Metal Gear on MSX, MG2, MGS1, 2, 3, 4, Peace Walker and MGSV -- make up a single Metal Gear saga and The Phantom Pain closes "the loop on that saga."

"In that sense, this will be the final Metal Gear Solid," Kojima said. "Even if the Metal Gear franchise continues, this is the last Metal Gear."

While the loop may be closing on Kojima's part in the Metal Gear saga, he hasn't ruled out someone else taking over the reins of the franchise or him working on another spin-off like Metal Gear Rising: Revengence. Back in 2012, Kojima mentioned in passing that Revengeance might be worthy of its own franchise.
