Google has started rolling out the new iteration of Google Maps for desktop users around the globe. The refreshed service introduces smarter features that may help users find what they need on the map.
Roughly a year after being unveiled at the Google I/O Conference in California last year, the redesigned mapping service will gradually be released to users in different countries over the next few weeks.
"With any product redesign, there may be bumps along the road. We're hoping that you're as excited as we are to navigate uncharted territory in pursuit of the perfect map. As always, we want to hear what you think as we work to improve the new Maps over time," wrote vice president of Google Maps Brian McClendon.
The new version of Google Maps makes trip planning even easier with smarter features to help people discover new places.
"Simply search for 'coffee' in your neighborhood, and you'll be able to see results and snippets right on the map. When you click on a cafe, the map will suggest related results that you may not have known about," McClendon added.
The new map will also turn anyone into a commuting ninja with its real-time inputs about traffic and giving users the best route possible whether one prefers to take a bike, car, train or just walk. Google Maps will give one vital piece of information such as distance and time of travel. There is also the option to check out a restaurant, for example, by utilizing Street View. Reviews about different places are also a few clicks away to make sure users are making informed choices.
Coming with the facelift is the rich imagery of businesses, mountains and important landmarks that can help people prior to a visit. These images can be viewed by scrolling through a carousel that collects all imagery available on the system. There is also the 3-D Google Earth mode that may make the experience more visually-appealing.
The pegman is also back, along with a platform that looks cleaner and run smoother.
The new Google Maps gets better as one uses it more frequently. Personalization spells the difference between the old one version and this version. The new version leans more toward having everything in one place.
The new Google Maps can be likened to a map where you have everything where you'd like it to be. No fingers trying to trace streets and places. No wondering how you get from point A to point B. No headaches.
