A couple who had been married for 67 years died hours apart this month while they laid side by side holding hands. Both Floyd and Violet Hartwig were suffering from a number of illnesses, so their death was expected, but no one knew it would have ended like this.
The children were the ones who sensed their parents were about to die, which was the reason the couple was placed in the same bed and holding hands. It was a great idea, as it allowed Floyd and Violet to share a final moment before passing away.
Floyd, who was 90 years old, was the first to die, followed by his wife, Violet, who was 89 years old. She died a few hours after her husband, and thus the wish the couple had of dying together was complete.
Floyd was a Navy man during the World War II. He and Violet knew each other since their days at elementary school, but were romantically involved only in 1940. Seven years after, the couple got married and began a journey that ended on Feb. 11.
"Hi honey, just a few lines from this lonely blue sailor of yours. Miss you darling and so in love with you," Floyd said in a love letter to Violet.
"Honey, I'll sure be glad when I get out of this," Floyd's letter continued. "It sure isn't for me, though at one time I thought the Navy was pretty swell. That was before I fell in love with the sweetest girl in the world."
Both Floyd and Violet suffered from multiple illnesses before they died. At one point, Floyd was diagnosed with bladder and colon cancer, and was also diagnosed with kidney failure weeks before he passed away. Violet, on the other hand, suffered from a number of strokes and had dementia.
Floyd and Violet left behind several children and grandchildren who love them very much.
