Mission Impossible 5 is the next installment in the Tom Cruise lead franchise, which is currently in production. However, things might not be going well for the film after reports claimed Paramount chose to halt production due to an unsatisfactory ending.
We're surprised about this move since Paramount postponed the release date of the movie from Christmas to July 31. This decision suggests the studio is confident in the film being a success at the box office, or maybe it has a lot do with Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
Hollywood Reporter claims that Christopher McQuarrie, director of the movie, is looking for a better ending to Mission Impossible 5. Apparently, the ending the team had in mind was not sufficient, so McQuarrie chose to get a writer friend of his onboard to help fix the issue.
A big budget movie coming to a halt in the middle of production is costly and might not turn out well when the film makes its way to theaters. A source who spoke with Hollywood Reporter suggests the director and Tom Cruise himself did not hate the original ending, but they prefer one that is perfect rather than good.
"Chris, Tom and a third person wanted to take a minute to get from what they thought was a good place to a more perfect place," said the source.
This isn't the first time Paramount has found itself in this position. The studio had to delay World War Z because the third act was a total mess. Making changes to the third act did not save the movie from being average, but maybe it saved it from being terrible.
In the case of Mission Impossible 5, we hope the ending is good enough to warrant this delay because folks in expensive suits will no doubt get someone fired.
Mission Impossible 5 has a high chance of turning into a box office winner since the previous movie, Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol earned nearly $700 million worldwide, making it the most successful film in the franchise to date.
Fast forward four years into the future and we have a movie that could surpass $700 million without a problem.
