Twitch Says First TwitchCon Will Take Place In Moscone Center In Fall 2015: Why It's A Big Deal

Live game video-streaming service Twitch has unveiled plans to host a convention called TwitchCon.

The convention will be for gamers and streamers alike, and will take place in San Francisco on Sept. 25 to 26.

"Twitch broadcasters have the most passionate fans, so we want to create an amazing experience where they can come together in person," said Twitch chief executive Emmett Shear. "TwitchCon will be an opportunity for the entire community -- broadcasters, game developers, viewers, and us -- to play and learn together."

While some might be skeptical that Twitch can successfully pull off a full-fledged convention, it's important to note that many were also skeptical that Twitch would take off as a service in the first place. Then Amazon decided to invest $970 million into acquiring the service.

Twitch has also launched a website for the convention and even a Twitter account.

It's unclear what exactly the convention will entail, but it seems as though attendees will be able to meet and greet with their favorite broadcasters, as well as watch live Twitch shows. Attendees will also be able to hear from what the service calls its "community's thought leaders."

The convention will be developed with event organization group ReedPop, which is behind other fan events in gaming such as Penny Arcade Expo and the New York Comic Con. ReedPop has been growing as an organization over the past few years, having launched a Paris Comic Con and even a second New York Comic Con with a focus specifically on comics themselves, rather than other things such as movies and video games.

As mentioned before, the service is currently owned by Amazon, which acquired the service last year after speculation that it would be Google purchasing it. It was founded back in 2011 by the people behind Justin.tv, and currently has around 100 million monthly active users.

Twitch has support for both iOS and Android for streaming on mobile devices. Users are able to browse through the selection by either game title or by featured games. Twitch has also been integrated into PC software. This includes the ability to stream to Twitch from Origin software from EA, Ubisoft's Uplay, or other services. It also supports streaming from some gaming consoles. There is dedicated Twitch software for Xbox 360, Xbox One, Ouya, and PlayStation 4.

The service has also moved beyond simple video game streaming and hosted live concerts, and has also asked for musicians to license their music to video game streamers.
