Issue seven of DC's Mortal Kombat X tie-in comic continues right where last issue left off -- with Kotal Khan swearing vengeance on Mileena and her followers.
And this issue wastes no time in pitting the armies of each warrior against one another. After concluding his speech last issue, Khan sends his father and a band of his deadliest warriors to snuff out Mileena and her top adviser, as well as find the missing Goro.
Turns out Goro doesn't want to be found. He has turned his back on Khan and joined Mileena and her Red Dragon army. Together he and Mileena's top advisor Reiko have hatched a plan to destroy Kotal's men by luring them into a deadly trap.
The ensuing slaughter makes up the majority of this issue, as Khan's father K'etz battles to the death with the fearsome four-armed Goro. The two trade blows, with artist Igor Vitorino depicting some gruesome "x-ray" style moves, as teeth and pieces of skull fly across the panels. At the end, you will definitely see the advantage of having four arms as opposed to two.
It makes for a violent turn of events as Khan's men are completely and utterly destroyed, leaving the self-proclaimed emperor in a dangerously weak position that should have some interesting repercussions down the line.
Yes, once again Earth takes a backseat to the battle raging in Outworld. That might be disappointing for some fans who are more curious about learning what Raiden, Scorpion and the rest of the Earth realm defenders are up to, but there are plenty of familiar faces in this issue to help keep the action rooted in the Mortal Kombat characters fans know and love. The ninja Rain receives a mention this issue as it is revealed he is working with Mileena, and the sinister Reptile also makes an appearance, reporting the events of the battle to Khan himself.
Series writer Kittleson doesn't have too much to do this week, in what is primarily an action-focused issue. That's alright, as it gives Vitorino's art some time to shine and makes for one of the better looking issues so far.
The characters of Mortal Kombat X are all picking sides and things are sure to get even bloodier before the war for the throne of Outworld is over. It remains to be seen if Earth will step in to put an end to Mileena and her army, but it should definitely make for an entertaining next issue.
