In the latest installment of the Teens React series by Benny and Rafi Fine, more famously known as The Fine Brothers, teenagers were introduced to the infamous Power Glove gaming technology that was developed for the original Nintendo Entertainment System.
The Power Glove, which was developed by Mattel and released to the market in 1989, was an accessory that allowed users to play video games on the NES console by waving their hands and clenching their fists, along with pressing buttons.
The Power Glove emits ultrasonic sound which people are not able to hear. The sound is received by sensors that are connected to a TV set which are able to identify the movement of the user's wrist and fingers.
To be able to make the most out of the device, Power Glove users in the past needed to memorize several program codes and finer shortcuts to allow them to access the full motion range in different video game titles.
"With teens today growing up with controller-less technology that actually works, showing them one of the early attempts had fun results," wrote The Fine Brothers in an e-mail to Tech Times.
"This is like the Wii before the Wii," said 18-year-old Labib in the video, which summed up the expected functionality of the Power Glove.
The keyword there, however, is "expected," as the accessory proved to be too ambitious in its offering and ultimately fell short with its many flaws.
Some of the teens were not sure if the Power Glove was an old or a new device, but some initially though that it was a cool accessory to use and a great idea for video gaming. However, the teens were only able to take away massive disappointment with their sore arms after attempting to play games with the device, including boxing title Punch Out.
"It's so difficult to know what to do," complained 19-year-old Sam. "It hurts your arm."
An advertisement from 1989 on the Power Glove heightened the excitement among the teens once again; similar to how the kids back then reacted when they first saw the commercial.
As an offshoot of the video, The Fine Brothers also has the same teenagers play the video game Rad Racer using the Power Glove, which is the title that gained fame after appearing in the 1980s movie The Wizard starring Fred Savage. The movie featured the Power Glove as the ultimate gaming accessory, primarily because the film was produced by Nintendo.
