The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2 will make sure that Katniss goes out with a big bang after Lionsgate revealed that the film will be released later in the year in IMAX and IMAX 3D. Folks who are not fans of 3D should not worry since the movie will also be released in 2D.
This will be the first time a Hunger Games movie will be released in 3D within the United States, although it is not the first time the blockbuster hit will be offered in an IMAX showing.
The first two films were, in fact, shown in IMAX; however, this did not happen for the third. From what we've come to understand, IMAX chose to show Interstellar instead of Mockingjay - Part 1, though, we can't say why such a move was taken.
"It's exciting to be back in The Hunger Games world and once again team up with our partners at Lionsgate, director Francis Lawrence and producers Nina Jacobson and Jon Kilik on what we believe will be a thrilling, action-packed finale to this blockbuster franchise," said Greg Foster, senior executive vice president of IMAX Corp. and CEO of IMAX Entertainment. "The fan enthusiasm and cultural impact that this series has generated [have] been truly remarkable and we are thrilled to offer audiences the opportunity to experience the last chapter in IMAX 3D."
We're surprised to see the final Hunger Games movie going down the path of 3D. We say this because back in 2012, director Gary Ross specifically stated that he would not direct the films in 3D because it wasn't a good fit.
So why the change of heart? Well, Ross was replaced by Francis Lawrence, who directed Mockingjay - Part 1 and will direct Part 2.
He's a huge fan of having a 3D release of the Hunger Games and so he did it with Part 1. However, the 3D version was only available in China, surprisingly.
Looking back at the previous movies in the franchise, we have to agree with Ross that it is not a good fit. However, it matters not because the 2D version will still be available for those who prefer the traditional experience.
