When Amazon Kindle Scribe was released, some bookworms expected it to have special features since it's an AI-powered eBook. It turns out that it has a missing feature that some fans want to add.
Thankfully, Amazon is listening to Kindle owners by rolling out a brand-new feature that allows readers to catch up on complicated plots more easily than ever. With AI-powered Recaps, it's quicker to revisit the book without the need to reread it.
Kindle Recaps: Your 'Previously On' for Book Series
Just like your favorite TV series that starts with a recap of previous episodes, Kindle Recaps provides a quick refresher on what occurred in previous books to help you save time and prevent you from having to re-read hundreds of pages, according to Android Police.
If you're jumping back into a fantasy epic, sci-fi trilogy, or contemporary series, this feature will catch you up without spoiling the pleasure of rediscovery.
How Kindle Recaps Work: AI Behind the Magic
Although Amazon's original announcement did not mention artificial intelligence outright, the company later affirmed that AI technology is responsible for these intelligent summaries, TechCrunch reported. These recaps extract key plot points and character developments to deliver brief, accurate summaries that enable readers to dive right back into the story.
You'll recognize a series has this option when you notice a "View Recaps" button on the Kindle library page. Alternatively, you can find it through the three-dot menu while viewing your grouped book series in the Kindle app.
If you want to use Recaps, install the latest firmware update for your Kindle. It's accessible on Amazon's website. You can also wait for the over-the-air updates.
What Series Are Covered?
At this point, Recaps are reserved for well-known English-language series and are limited to US-based Kindle customers. Amazon hasn't published an official list of supported series, but it's likely that if you're reading something popular, it's already supported, or soon will be.
Amazon Kindle Recaps Are Inaccurate
While the feature is being lauded for its utility, some users on Reddit think that Amazon should improve its AI accuracy. Nevertheless, the Seattle giant insists that the summaries are true to the original stories and made only to augment the reading experience, particularly when handling lengthy or complicated narratives.
"hmm it doesn't specify who will be writing the recaps. what if they task it to a gen AI software that hallucinates elements of the plot?" one Redditor asked.
Others are happy to see Recaps coming to their Kindle devices:
"The amount of times I have re-read series just to refresh my memory for the newest book. This is a godsend!" one Reddit user wrote.
"Oh I'll love this feature so much," another person commented.
