It's usual for smartphones to receive yearly upgrades, especially for flagship devices from companies competing against one another. However, it doesn't seem to be the case for OnePlus for this year.
Last week, the company confirmed that there will be no OnePlus Open 2 foldable device coming this year to succeed the almost two-year-old foldable released in late 2023.
OnePlus Open 2 Foldable Is Not Coming This Year
A new report from 9to5Google dived deep into the latest announcement from OnePlus which confirmed that the company will not release a follow-up Open 2 foldable phone.
The company shared that it will pass on releasing the Open 2 for 2025 despite the massive demand and anticipation from the public.
It was expected that OnePlus would release a success to their foldable smartphone because of their immense success of Open, the device that offered an almost-no gap screen, superb battery life, performance, and thin body.
Many praised the OnePlus Open as it was able to go up against the industry giants who have long worked on their foldables such as Samsung as the device also performed well in the market.
OnePlus Explains Why 2025 Will See No Foldables
The report revealed that OnePlus' reason behind skipping the release of the Open 2 foldable is that it wanted to "set new benchmarks" and "challenge the status quo" in the various product categories.
However, the company was criticized for foregoing this year's release of the Open 2 as its co-BBK Electronics subsidiary, Oppo, released the Find N5 which is highly regarded for its latest features.
The World of Foldables in the Tech Industry
Android-based smartphones have been dominating the foldable subcategory, and this is led by brands such as Samsung, Oppo, OnePlus, and Huawei. That being said, the competition now focuses on making the devices slimmer, faster, more powerful, and cheaper.
However, the industry is now seeing another big player make their eventual move, as the tech giant from Cupertino, Apple, is rumored to be working on their take on foldable devices that will reportedly come soon.
A previous patent discovered last year shed light on Apple's plans for a foldable device, showing off a new innovative hinge meant for flexible devices without mentioning anything about the smartphone itself.
OnePlus is fairly a new player in the foldable smartphone industry and so far, the company's first Open device was met with great enthusiasm and reviews as it did not disappoint users. However, it has been confirmed that there will be a wait for the next OnePlus Open, so excited fans have no choice but to wait a lot longer.
