Trump Administration Plans to Shutter USAID: Elon Musk Says Agency is 'Beyond Repair'

Musk and Trump immediately agreed to shut down USAID since it holds no purpose anymore.

Elon Musk, who now serves as an important adviser to the Trump administration, announced that the US Agency for International Development (USAID) will either to see a drastic overhaul or face structural closure.

Criticism from Musk along with a set of actions against USAID spoke of an aggressive thrust to reshape governmental operations and lop off Federal programs.

Elon Musk's Daring Statement Over the Future of USAID

Recently, in a live session on X Spaces, Musk claimed to have discussed the future of USAID with President Donald Trump. According to AP News, Musk said that Trump concurred that the agency should be dissolved.

Musk went further to declare that USAID had become "beyond repair," calling it "a ball of worms" rather than a simple problem that could be solved with minor reforms.

It's apparent that the tech billionaire has a growing frustration with the operations of the agency. For Musk, it seems that the USAID has grown too entrenched in inefficiency to be saved.

Government's Response to USAID's Internal Conflict

Musk's vocal attempt to shutter USAID follows massive internal tumult. The Trump administration previously put on leave two security chiefs of the agency for allegedly refusing to turn over the classified material sought by Musk's government inspection team known as DOGE, an acronym for Department of Government Efficiency.

This decision immediately led to a legal tussle between the agency's officials and Musk's team, as the security chiefs, John Voorhees and Brian McGill, argued that they were duty-bound to deny access on legal grounds of insufficient clearance levels.

But the standoff remained in place when, on Saturday, Musk's DOGE team was granted access to USAID's highly classified intelligence reports without having the appropriate security clearances to view such information.

Musk's War Against Government Agencies

Musk's activities at USAID form part of a broader effort to make the government more efficient—an ambition shared across the Trump administration.

DOGE was created specifically to reduce the federal workforce, and the team has since carried out similar operations in other government departments such as the Treasury Department, where Musk's team accessed sensitive systems related to Social Security and Medicare.

This eventually led to the resignation by a senior Treasury official.

The Trump administration has taken a wider approach to freezing foreign assistance programs, including those handled by USAID. It has resulted in the significant laying off and furlough of the staff, thereby affecting the ability of the agency in carrying on its core humanitarian, development, and security work around the world.

Trump even said he wants federal workers to return to their jobs. However, a CNN report said that problems with the costs and the practicality of this directive could have an impact on the agencies.

Why is USAID Important?

Historically, the United States, the world's largest donor for humanitarian assistance, has granted billions of dollars through USAID to countries around the world. Operations run by the agency have assisted global health and education, as well as relief from disasters and economic development for over 100 nations.

However, in the era of demanding budget cuts and personnel reductions pressed by the Trump administration, USAID's leadership faces challenges to maintain the operations.

The fact that USAID's website surprisingly vanished over the weekend has only added to the speculation about its future. According to people familiar with the matter, Musk's DOGE team has been studying USAID's operations closely, possibly in preparation for a complete restructuring or shutdown.

News of USAID's closure sent shockwaves across the political divide. Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren expressed apprehensions about Musk's growing influence on government agencies and warned that a foray by the billionaire might result in the compromising of personal information and the dismantling of essential public services.

Warren called for measures to protect citizens against the adverse impact of Musk's initiatives but didn't go into details.

Republican leaders such as Senator Marco Rubio have come out in the open to support this move of the Trump administration to freeze foreign aid. They believe that USAID is "run by radical lunatics" whose programs are ineffective and counterproductive.

The End of USAID?

The Trump administration, along with the DOGE team of Musk, is pressing ahead with its plans for change, while the future of USAID remains very much in limbo. Should USAID get shut down, this would presage a sea change in US foreign policy and international humanitarian aid.

Some critics believe it would have an apocalyptic consequence for humanitarian work being done around the globe; other supporters think this may allow for a less bloated, more effective government.
