The next best thing for TikTok might be RedNote and not Instagram's Reels, but for a video editing app, there is nothing yet on the market that can match ByteDance's famed app, until now. Meta announced that it now has a contender for CapCut after the United States enacted its infamous ban against ByteDance's TikTok and other Chinese-owned apps, with Instagram's "Edits."
While TikTok already returned its US operations thanks to the massive support the incoming President Donald J. Trump pledged, CapCut is yet to be reinstated and be available on mobile app platforms.
Meta Unveils 'Edits,' A New Video Editing App Like CapCut
The latest post on Threads by Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri dropped a surprise announcement for all, showcasing their upcoming app called "Edits" to deliver a new video editing platform to the world. Mosseri regarded "Edits" to be a new app that can help users explore their passion for "making videos on your phone," and it is set to offer users a new content creation platform to enjoy.
Many reports regarded that this new Edits app will be similar to ByteDance's CapCut, an app that gained significant popularity in the world because of its iconic video editing platform that is easily accessible via TikTok.
According to Mosseri, Edits will feature its own "inspiration tab," a higher quality camera for shooting videos, another tab to save or keep track of ideas, massive editing tools, drafts that can be shared with friends, and the ability to easily export content to Instagram.
Instagram's Edits Coming February While CapCut is Out
It was revealed by Mosseri that Meta and Instagram's teams are still developing the app but it will be available next month for users to enjoy while CapCut is not yet reinstated, unlike TikTok. Its iOS version is now available to 'pre-order' via the Apple App Store for iPhone users, but there are no specific timelines for its availability on Android via the Google Play Store and other app marketplaces.
The Massive TikTok Ban Was Here For a Few Hours
The United States gave TikTok six months to divest ByteDance to continue its US operations but the renowned social media platform rejected this idea and chose to fight the government and its law. However, TikTok did not want to do so and instead faced the ban that the country imposed against it, leading to 170 million users losing a platform over the weekend for as much as 14 hours.
While Trump gave TikTok the heads up that they may bring back their operations in the country, with service providers like Apple and Google also given the green light to have it return, the damage has already been done. Many TikTokers looked for other platforms that would suffice TikTok's experiences and features, with one of the outstanding alternatives being another Chinese social media platform known as RedNote or Xiaohongshu.
TikTok may be back in the United States after giving 170 million Americans the scare after shutting down for 14 hours, but there are still others like CapCut and more who are not given the same luxury as the famed app. That being said, Meta is looking to fill the void CapCut has left with Instagram's Edits, with the video editing app soon to make its debut by February and share a new experience for all.
