Lance Armstrong reportedly crashed into two parked cars post a night out in Aspen; however, the cyclist let his girlfriend take the blame for the accident.
The incident occurred on Dec. 28, 2014, when Armstrong hit two SUVs that were parked. However, in a bid to avoid national attention, the disgraced cyclist let his girlfriend Anna Hansen take the blame as revealed by police reports. Weeks later, Aspen police has cited Armstrong for failing to report the accident and for speeding. That too after Hansen admitted she was lying on his behalf.
Initially, Hansen divulged to the police that she was the one driving home from a party at the Aspen Art Museum. Due to the icy roads she lost control of the vehicle - a GMC Yukon - belonging to Armstrong and ended up crashing into the parked cars. Hansen mentioned she was driving as Armstrong "had a little bit to drink."
One of the men who were renting the SUV which got hit told the cops that Hansen rushed to his home clad in high heels and apologized for the mishap. She also promised to reimburse the man for repair work.
"She said, 'I'm Anna, we're the Armstrongs, my husband's Lance, he was just driving maybe too fast around the corner or something,'" revealed the man to the police.
The man called 911 to report the hit-and-run. However, both Armstrong and Hansen had left the spot prior to the arrival of the police.
Hansen was later interrogated by the cops and she let on that Armstrong was the one driving the vehicle, but they decided to let Anna take the responsibility. Hansen revealed to the police that since the family name splashed everywhere publicly for the past few years, she was doing so to protect her family.
"I thought, gosh, Anna Hansen hit some cars, it's not going to show up in the papers, but Lance Armstrong hit some cars, it's going to be a national story," revealed Hansen.
Not reporting accidents is a misdemeanor that is punishable. One can get up to 90 days in prison and fined anywhere between $150 and $300. Speeding if the conditions do not permit is also punishable and a fine of $15 to $100 can be levied.
While Hansen has not been charged with the crime, Armstrong is slated for a court appearance on March 17.
