A massive surprise fell in the form of a free Final Fantasy 16 copy for some PlayStation Plus subscribers last Thursday night, and many claimed that they were able to download the game. Several users shared this discovery on social media and others followed suit, but it was said that not all were able to find a copy of the game that was available to download for free.
To date, PlayStation still has not released any announcements or statements behind this, if it was an unintended release or meant to be available for gamers.
Final Fantasy 16 Available for Free to PlayStation Plus Subscribers
The full version of Final Fantasy XVI was temporarily available to download for free on PlayStation Plus, and many users shared this phenomenon online, saying that they were able to snag a copy. Later on, a renowned leaker and game insider, Wario64, confirmed that the latest game from Square Enix's famous franchise was indeed on PS Plus, its first time available on the service.
However, users were only allowed to access it via the PS5, and for users who accessed it via the PlayStation Store on the web, it did not appear.
That being said, some users claimed that they were not able to see this or download the game. Other testimonies claimedthat this was because it is only allowed for PlayStation Plus Extra or Premium subscribers.
Is the Free Final Fantasy XVI Still Available on PS Plus?
According to ComicBook Gaming, users can no longer see Final Fantasy XVI on PS Plus, with the game available to download for free. It was also said that for users who were able to get a free copy, the game would still be accessible as there were no reports that it was taken off their accounts.
Speculations claim that this might be because PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium's next freebie game is Final Fantasy XVI, and it only appeared early for some users.
Square Enix's Final Fantasy 16
The eight-year wait for Square Enix's Final Fantasy XVI finally saw a copy of the game last June 2023, bringing over the latest installation of the game franchise to the world. It was originally a PlayStation 5 exclusive, and Sony is known for partnering with Square Enix to bring an exclusive PS5 bundle that offers a themed cover, a DualSense controller with a skin, and the game's copy.
In this game, the plot shifted over to a new lead, Clive Rosfield, known for being the protector of their land, a.k.a. the First Shield of Rosaria, and the protector of the Dominant of the Phoenix. FFXVI is known for paying homage to its 16-bit origins in the many experiences in the game, but it also delivered the cutting-edge features of modern gaming that the PS5 showcased.
Come next month, Final Fantasy XVI is coming to PC platforms for the first time as promised by Square Enix, with PlayStation 5's exclusivity ending.
However, as its PC version release is nearing, PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers were treated to a free copy of the game. Sadly, recent users who checked it, despite being on Premium, can no longer find this in the service.
