"Final Fantasy VII Remake," as the name suggests, is an updated version of Square Enix's classic game of the same title. While the original FFVII was a huge success, it seems like the remake version is starting to catch up.
'Final Fantasy VII Remake' Is Catching Up to the Original Game's Sales Numbers
According to Push Square, the newer "Final Fantasy VII Remake," along with its very own standalone expansion or upgrade called Integrate, has already been able to cross impressive sales milestones. It comes as the Remake's numbers are closing into the numbers of the original games.
So far, Square Enix has announced that it has sold seven copies of the "Final Fantasy VII Remake" worldwide. It was reported that the figure involves not just digital editions but also the physical editions of the game.
Seven Million Units Sold But Square Enix Not Celebrating Just Yet
The seven million "Final Fantasy VII Remake" units sold were from the PlayStation and PC versions. However, Square Enix is often hard to read regarding its sales expectations because it doesn't always celebrate huge wins.
For example, the "Final Fantasy XVI" was only described as "fine" despite being able to sell a whopping three million copies. Another title that did great was the "Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters," which garnered another three million units.
Original PS1 Version of 'Final Fantasy VII' Sold 9.8 Million Before Re-Released to Other Platforms
Daniel Ahmed, an analyst, still highlighted how the original PS1 version of "Final Fantasy VII" was able to sell 9.8 million before it was re-released to other platforms. Upon distribution, it became harder to track as it also changed the nature of the game.
The "Final Fantasy VII Remake" was made available as a PlayStation Plus Premium title in March 2021, which, according to Push Square, made things "slightly murkier" and brought up "repressed memories of that painful upgrade debacle."
The Original 'Final Fantasy VII' CD-ROM PC Version Sold 1 Million
One interesting detail posted by Wario64 on X was that "Final Fantasy VII" was able to sell seven million copies. With that number still expected to increase, the remake version of the game could sell more than the units sold of the original version on PS1.
So far, fans will have to wait and see if the "Final Fantasy VII Remake" will be able to surpass the original version, at least when it comes to PS1 numbers. According to another X user, bazztek, the CD-ROM PC version of the original "Final Fantasy VII" sold 1 million.
That means the total number of units sold for PC and PS1 versions of the "Final Fantasy VII" was 10.8 million. Thus, the number of sales of the "Final Fantasy VII Remake" is still about a third of the PC and PS1 combined sales of the original version.
