If you missed out on buying a PlayStation 5 console before, you might regret buying it later—if you plan to buy it in Japan.
Sony has once again announced a price increase for its popular PS5 consoles in Japan. This marks the latest in a series of price adjustments for the gaming system since its launch.
PS5 Price Increase in Japan
Effective Sept. 2, the standard PS5 with a disc drive will see a price increase to ¥79,980 (~$550) from its previous ¥66,980 (~$460).
Meanwhile, the digital-only version will rise to ¥72,980 (~$500) from ¥59,980 (~$415). From this change, there's a noticeable increase of ¥13,000 (~$90) for both models.
"We appreciate your understanding so that we can continue to provide our customers with the best gaming experience and operate a stable business," Sony said.
From the looks of it, it might take a long time before we see a price cut.
Reasons Behind the PS5 Price Hike
According to Push Square, Sony attributed the price increase to the "recent challenging external environment," citing global economic fluctuations and their impact on the business. This suggests that factors such as rising component costs, supply chain disruptions, and inflation are playing a role in the decision.
PS5 Accessories Will Also Feel Price Hike
In addition to the console price hike, Sony also announced that the prices of PS5 accessories will be increasing on the same date.
The DualSense controller, PS Portal device, Pulse Explore earphones, DualSense Edge controller, and PSVR2 will all see price hikes.
If the console maker unveils the PS5 Pro this year, we could also assume it would be slapped with a price increase.
What Does This Mean For Console Gamers
The repeated price hikes for the PS5 may have a significant impact on gamers. For those who have been waiting to purchase a console, the increased cost may be a deterrent. Additionally, the rising prices of accessories can add to the overall cost of gaming.
Sony's decision to raise the prices of its PS5 consoles and accessories once again is a significant development for the gaming industry. While the company has cited external factors as the reason for the price increases, it remains to be seen how gamers will respond to these changes.
Either way, despite the slow growth of PlayStation after it reached the 60 million milestone, people will still buy the console. Some want to save money and buy second-hand PS5s, but others do not dare to look for the price tag since what they only want is to play at the end of the day.
For those who already have a PS5, you probably encountered some issues accessing your PlayStation account. Other gamers experienced getting locked out of their PS5 account. If this ever happened to you, here's how you can get back into your locked account.
