Free users of ChatGPT can now use DALL-E 3 to generate images. You can ask the AI chatbot to create a personalized card for your friend, but there's a catch.OpenAI has recently expanded its AI-powered offerings, making the popular DALL-E 3 image generation tool available to all ChatGPT users, including those on the free tier. This new feature allows anyone to create a wide range of visuals, from business logos to abstract paintings, directly through ChatGPT.
Previously, this functionality was reserved for ChatGPT Plus subscribers, but now, even free users can enjoy the benefits, albeit with some limitations.
Image Creation Now Available to Free Users
Starting on Thursday, Aug. 8, OpenAI began rolling out DALL-E 3 image generation to free users of ChatGPT. This move opens up a world of creative possibilities, enabling users to generate anything from a simple sketch to an intricate artwork with just a few prompts. Whether you need a business logo, a charcoal drawing, or an abstract painting, ChatGPT now has you covered.
However, there is a catch, according to The Verge. While Plus subscribers can request up to 50 images per day, free users are limited to just two images daily. This limitation may be a downside for those with extensive image needs, but it's a generous offering for casual users who only need a few visuals.
For comparison, Microsoft's free version of Copilot offers up to 15 images per day, making it a viable alternative for those who need more frequent access to AI-generated images.
How to Use DALL-E 3 for Image Generation
One of the most exciting features of DALL-E 3 within ChatGPT is its ability to assist users who may not be sure what type of image they want. For example, you can ask ChatGPT to suggest an image style or theme based on a vague description. In a demonstration on X (formerly Twitter), OpenAI showcased this capability with a user request for an "art nouveau" wedding in a barn. ChatGPT responded by generating an image that perfectly captured the requested style.
To test this feature, Lance Whitney of ZDNET asked ChatGPT to help design a logo for a business. It first inquired about the business details, such as the name, industry, target audience, and any specific themes he had in mind.
After providing the necessary information, ChatGPT generated a list of suggested visual elements for the logo. Once Whitney approved the concept, it created a logo that included all the desired features. ChatGPT even offered to make refinements if there's a need for any changes.
Accessing DALL-E 3: What to Expect
Although OpenAI has stated that the image generation feature is gradually rolling out, many free users, including myself, have already gained access.
After creating two images, you will receive a notification that you have reached the daily limit to generate a picture. OpenAI will prompt you to upgrade or wait for the next day to generate more images. If you choose the first option, you need to subscribe to ChatGPT Plus to bypass the caveat.
Other AI Image Generation Tools to Consider
While DALL-E 3 is a powerful tool, it's not the only option available. Several other AI-powered image creation tools exist online or through mobile apps, including Microsoft Designer, Google Gemini's Imagen 2, Stability AI's DreamStudio, Midjourney, and Wombo Dream. Each platform has its own unique strengths, so depending on your needs, you may want to explore these alternatives as well.
A New Creative Tool for ChatGPT Users
The introduction of DALL-E 3 image generation to free ChatGPT users is a significant enhancement to the platform. It opens up new creative possibilities for those who may not have the resources to subscribe to premium services.
While the daily limit of two images may be restrictive for some, it's a great option for users with lighter image needs. Whether you're designing a logo, planning an event, or simply exploring your creative side, this new feature adds substantial value to the ChatGPT experience.
