Twilio has sunset its Authy desktop apps. This means that regardless if you're a Windows, macOS, or Linux user, you can no longer use them starting this month.

Authy, like other 2FA apps such as Google Authenticator and Microsoft Authenticator, generates a unique code every 30 seconds for secure account sign-ins.

Unlike its competitors, Authy has offered a desktop version, making it convenient for users to log into accounts without needing their phones. However, this convenience will soon come to an end. The impending shutdown of the app was first announced in early 2024.

Regarding the shutdown, the update blocked unsynced users, forcibly logging them out of the app.

Options for macOS Users Who Want to Use Authy

For macOS users with M1 or M2 silicon, there is a silver lining. Authy will still be available as an iOS app that can be downloaded on these devices. For others, Authy recommends switching to the mobile version, which can be synced with the desktop app for a seamless transition.

Migrating to a New 2FA App

Users considering a switch to a different 2FA app should note that Authy lacks an export feature, according to Bleeping Computer's report.  This means that before moving to a new app, users must disable 2FA on all connected accounts and then re-enable it with the new application.

Changes in Customer Support

Twilio, Authy's parent company, is also shifting Authy's customer support to Twilio's main help center after January 15th, 2024. This move is part of Twilio's broader strategy to streamline operations and focus on high-demand product solutions.

Strategic Business Decisions

Twilio's decision to sunset the desktop app is driven by the goal to "streamline our focus and provide more value on existing product solutions." This decision follows a 5% workforce reduction in December 2023 and a recent change in the company's CEO.

The discontinuation of Authy's desktop app marks a significant shift towards mobile-centric security solutions. Users are encouraged to transition to the mobile version or explore other 2FA apps to ensure continued protection of their accounts.

In other news, Google Maps and Waze navigation apps received huge upgrades to cater to the iPhone and CarPlay users. According to Tech Times, the majority of the features are focused on giving users safer and smoother drives on the road.

With Google Maps, reporting road hazards and even the severity of traffic congestion is now possible. This is useful, especially for other drivers who will get past the road. What's more, the destination guidance is also here to assist them in case there's an unfamiliar condition on the road.

On the other hand, Waze users can take advantage of the new functionality designed for traffic events. With this, you will be alerted if there are obstacles or obstructions that could affect the traffic flow. These include road closures, parades, and other events.
