Google is rolling out significant improvements to both Google Maps and Waze, aiming to enhance user experience and safety on the road.
Google Maps Improvements For Drivers
According to MacRumors, Google Maps users will now find it easier to report incidents like accidents, road hazards, and traffic congestion. Larger, more prominent reporting icons make it quicker to share information with the community. Additionally, users can now see which app - Google Maps or Waze - the reported incident originated from, providing valuable context.
To assist drivers in reaching their destinations more efficiently, Google Maps is introducing destination guidance. This feature highlights the target building and its entrance as you approach, making it simpler to locate your destination, especially in unfamiliar or low-light conditions.
In April, Google Maps unveiled new updates designed to improve trip planning. Tech Times reported that the features initially rolled out in more than 40 cities across North America.
When you attempt to search for a specific city in Maps, you will notice that there are preferences and interests that will appear in the list. You can even see the iconic landmarks in an area that is tailored to your desires.
There's also a curated list that includes Gems, Top, and Trending. Depending on the popularity, you can discover hidden gems locally within the community you are visiting.
Waze Boosts Safety and Traffic Awareness
Waze is also receiving several enhancements to improve the driving experience. The app will now alert drivers to various types of speed cameras, including those that monitor speeding, red light violations, lane violations, seatbelt usage, and phone usage. This added layer of awareness can help drivers avoid costly fines and accidents.
To provide more context about traffic conditions, Waze is introducing a new feature for traffic events. Users will receive notifications about events like parades, concerts, or sporting events that could impact traffic flow. This information includes details about road closures and real-time traffic updates, empowering drivers to plan their routes accordingly.
Although the improvements appear to be colliding with one another for Waze and Google Maps, they remain unique and separate.
In a press briefing on Tuesday, July 30, Can Comertoglu, the Head of Product for Google Maps praised the dedication of Waze users.
"They prefer some of the things that Waze does over Google Maps, and we know the reverse is true as well," Comertoglu told The Verge.
Lock Screen Navigation and Broader Availability
For added convenience, Waze is bringing lock screen navigation to iOS devices later this year. This feature allows users to access turn-by-turn directions and real-time traffic updates without unlocking their phones.
The new features for Google Maps and Waze are currently rolling out globally on Android and iOS devices, as well as on cars with Google built-in, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay.
