Fiber Optic Cables Cut Become New Threat to Paris Olympics

This is the second attack on the French infrastructure within a few days.

As the world converges on Paris for the Olympic Games, France is facing a growing crisis. In the latest attack on the nation's critical infrastructure, multiple fiber optic cables were severed overnight in the country's southern and eastern regions.

Telecommunications Infrastructure Targeted

The coordinated attack on the fiber optic network has disrupted broadband services across vast swathes of France. While the cables connecting Paris and the Olympic venues remained intact, the incident highlights the vulnerability of the nation's telecommunications infrastructure.

According to Bloomberg's report, several major telecommunications companies, including SFR, Iliad's Free, and Netalis, have reported service disruptions. These companies are working diligently to restore services by rerouting traffic and deploying backup networks. However, users in affected areas may experience slower internet speeds until repairs are complete.

The five lines under SFR, a telecommunications company in the country, were cut between 1 AM and 3 AM CET (Central European Time).

A Pattern of Sabotage

This is the second major attack on French infrastructure in just a few days. The coordinated fires on French rail lines that disrupted train services ahead of the opening ceremony have raised concerns about the security posture of the country, a spokesperson said.

The French authorities are investigating both incidents as acts of sabotage. The Paris Public Prosecutor's Office is working closely with regional counterparts to identify the perpetrators and motives behind these attacks.

Heightened Security Concerns

France has been on high alert in the lead-up to the Olympic Games. The unprecedented security measures deployed for the event, including the use of artificial intelligence for threat detection, have been met with both praise and criticism.

The recent attacks highlight the challenges faced by authorities in protecting critical infrastructure while hosting a global event. As the investigation unfolds, the world watches with bated breath, hoping that these acts of sabotage do not escalate further.

"Last night, our telecommunications operators were affected by damage in several départements. I condemn these cowardly and irresponsible acts," outgoing Junior Minister for Digital Affairs Marina Ferrari said via Politico.

No matter how advanced the monitoring tools are, it won't be enough to survey the attackers who cut the optic cables in France. In this digital age, a severed cable can mean "doom" to a system or an organization especially since everyone now relies on the internet for connection.

Before the Paris Olympics kicked off, authorities urged people to be careful when buying tickets online. Since fraudsters were everywhere, fake tickets were also everywhere.

Of course, there's a way to spot if the website is fake or not. You should check the other information on the website before you proceed to click "purchase" for your Olympics ticket. Verify if all of them are legitimate.
