Apple TV+ Eyes Licensed Content to Bolster Streaming Service

More quality movies for streaming, more profit for Apple.

Apple TV+, known for its high-caliber originals like "Ted Lasso," is reportedly in talks to license content from major Hollywood studios.

The latest move signifies Apple's intent to expand its streaming service offerings and compete more effectively in the crowded market, Bloomberg reports.

Launched in 2019, Apple TV+ initially focused on building a library of exclusive, high-quality original shows. While critically acclaimed ("Ted Lasso") and award-winning ("The Morning Show"), these successes haven't translated into a subscriber base on par with competitors.

Research by MoffettNathanson reveals only 11% of US households subscribe to Apple TV+, compared to a dominant 55% for Netflix.

According to MacRumors, experts suggest the limited content library compared to streaming giants like Netflix and Disney+ might be a key factor hindering growth.

Data from Antenna indicates a correlation between wider content libraries and lower cancellation rates, highlighting the importance of variety for subscriber retention.

Testing the Waters with Licensed Films

Apple has already begun exploring the potential of licensed content. Earlier in 2024, they added popular movies like "Mean Girls" and "Titanic" to their US library through studio deals. The positive reception to these additions is believed to have fueled Apple's desire to expand further.

A Content Expansion on the Horizon

Current negotiations suggest that the Cupertino tech giant is pursuing deals that would bring a more extensive selection of licensed content to the platform - not just domestically, but potentially internationally as well. This aligns with a growing trend: major studios like Warner Bros., Discovery, and Disney are increasingly open to licensing their content to multiple platforms for additional revenue streams.

Apple TV+ appears to be at a crossroads. The potential influx of licensed content could be a game-changer. By offering a wider variety of shows and movies, Apple TV+ might finally be able to bridge the content gap and attract a larger audience, effectively competing with the established streaming giants.

PlayStation Users to Get Apple TV+ Free Trial

For PlayStation owners who want to get out temporarily to enjoy movie streaming, they can now claim a free Apple TV+ trial. According to PSU, this will allow them to enjoy using the streaming service for three months.

It's important to note that this three-month trial is only available for new and returning Apple TV+ members. Of course, you should have PS4 or PS5 to make this work.

Apple will be offering this until Sept. 22 so you still have time to redeem this precious gift.

In other news, Tech Times reported that AirPods Pro 2 is a good investment even after years since its launch. Apple's true wireless earbuds will only get better especially when iOS 18 arrives in the scene.
