Apple Intelligence is NOT Powered by OpenELM, Apple Claims After YouTube Training Issue

Apple denied its OpenELM model as Apple Intelligence's source.

The latest statement from Cupertino claims that Apple Intelligence is not using or powered by OpenELM, the AI model that the company revealed earlier this year as part of its developments. This latest clarification follows the recent controversy that erupted which claims that several tech companies trained their AI models on YouTube's data, with Apple part of this issue.

It is known that Apple created OpenELM as part of its contributions to the AI industry, centering on an open-sourced model.

In a new statement from Apple (via 9to5Mac), the company denied any connection between Apple Intelligence and its renowned generative AI model, OpenELM. According to Cupertino, OpenELM does not power its new AI experiences made available to the likes of the iPhone, iPad, and Mac, with this specific model not used by any of its technologies.

The company also stressed that OpenELM is a "state-of-the-art open language model" that was mainly meant to advance the research community behind AI.

Also, it was revealed that this specific open-source large language model (LLM) would no longer be developed further by Cupertino.

YouTube Subtitles AI Model Training Controversy

The latest clarification by Apple was its response to the new controversy alleging them other companies includingAnthrophic, Nvidia, and Salesforce, using YouTube's subtitles to train their AI models without consent. Allegedly, these Silicon Valley companies took the data from the likes of MKBHD, MrBeast, PewDiePie, John Oliver, and more, according to Proof News (via Wired).

EleutherAI was allegedly responsible for downloading the YouTube data and helped these companies with their AI training.

Apple Intelligence and its Development

Since the eruption of AI in the market in late 2022 and early 2023, companies like OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, and more raced against each other to deliver their generative offers. However, Apple was not among them, but speculations claim that Cupertino has already working on it since early 2023, with claims saying that it is looking to be like ChatGPT.

While there was no information or teasers from Apple while it was under development, there were several hintsdropped by the company and its CEO, Tim Cook, coming soon to its technology.

Before the much-awaited WWDC 2024, it was unveiled that Cupertino would call its AI 'Apple Intelligence,' and the rest was history after the event.

There were several research and studies shared by Apple before it confirmed Apple Intelligence, which talked about its AI models and how it was developed. Now, Cupertino wants to clear the air and deny OpenELM's presence on Apple Intelligence, and this is because it is now embroiled in a controversy alleging that it trained on YouTube's data to develop the model.
