Earlier this year, Samsung introduced Galaxy AI, but there was no news regarding Bixby's upgrade. That is now changing, as the South Korean tech giant confirmed that an AI revamp is coming for the assistant. Since the arrival of the powerful and feature-packed Galaxy AI, there have been speculations that Bixby is getting axed from being a voice assistant, but that is not entirely the case.
The latest confirmation brings significant news for an upgrade to Bixby, but what will Samsung deliver for the AI assistant?
Samsung Confirms Bixby is Getting an AI Revamp Soon
The latest confirmation from Samsung sheds light on Bixby's upgrade, which is coming soon and will be given an AI revamp, according to the South Korean company's mobile chief, TM Roh (via CNBC). According to a Samsung executive, Bixby will be given a generative AI upgrade in the future, and it is looking to advance AI with what the company has to offer.
However, Samsung and Roh did not provide additional information regarding Bixby's upgrade, only that it would undergo a revamp with generative AI.
This would give Bixby more advanced capabilities compared to its previous features, expanding more on information and intelligence with gen AI powers.
Will Galaxy AI Arrive at Bixby as its upgrade?
Roh's recent statement may suggest that Bixby would not get Galaxy AI as part of its upgrade despite centering on generative AI. It is important to note that the Samsung executive used the term "generative AI" instead of outright saying Galaxy AI, which uses the same technology.
However, take this with a grain of salt, as Samsung might upgrade Bixby with its newfound AI focus for Galaxy devices.
Samsung's Bixby and Galaxy AI
It was seven years ago when Samsung first introduced Bixby to the world. It was its take on an AI voice assistant that was first made available on the Galaxy S8 series, given a dedicated button to call on the tech. It saw a rocky start as its launch was initially delayed, with its US availability not released immediately, but it was regarded as rivaling the likes of Apple's Siri, Amazon's Alexa, and more.
For many years, Samsung used Bixby as its premium voice assistant, delivering massive features for users and capable of following voice commands.
However, many considered it to be replaced by Galaxy AI when it first arrived in 2024 alongside the Galaxy S24 series, one that is more powerful as it features generative AI, regarded by many as a massive upgrade.
Despite this, Bixby will not be replaced, said Samsung, and the voice assistant will remain available on Galaxy devices despite the presence of its generative new player, Galaxy AI. Soon, Bixby will see a massive upgrade that will help improve what it offers using generative AI to power it, but it will not be Galaxy AI exactly, with Samsung keeping users in the dark until its upcoming reveal.
