It was revealed that Riot Games once considered developing a League of Legends-based platformer similar to Nintendo's famed Super Smash Bros. fighting game. However, the latest development claimed that Riot had already canceled this game and would never be seen by the gaming industry, with the company focusing on its Tekken-like fighting title.

It will still be a year before Riot Games finally releases 2XKO, one of its much-awaited games. This game will feature a new fighting experience featuring the League's Champions.

Riot's League of Legends Platformer is Now Canceled

A new report from ReaderGrev's Mikhail Klimentov unveiled that Riot Games has now canceled its plans to develop another League of Legends-based fighting game, but it is now in the style of a platformer. This was under the codename Pool Party in the company's internal development, and Riot had dedicated as much as 70 to 80 employees working on it when it was scrapped.

One reason Riot Games canceled Pool Party was the failure of MultiVersus, the Warner Bros. platform fighting game.

Additionally, the company reassessed the need for a Super Smash Bros. competitor in the market. Half of the workers under Pool Party were reassigned to other Riot projects, while others are applying for other positions within the company.

Riot Games Once Planned a Super Smash Bros.-style Game

The story behind this Super Smash Bros.-esque game featuring League of Legends' characters and lore was to fill the eSports scene with a platform fighting game, which Nintendo did not take advantage of. Despite this cancelation, Riot Games still has its hands full with its development of 2XKO, the main fighting game based on League of Legends, which is on track for 2025.

Riot Games and Its New Genre for Its Titles

For many years, Riot Games has focused on a multiplayer online battle arena, famously known as MOBA, with its League of Legends franchise, which first started on the PC. It later saw the mobile version of the game, which offered a new experience for many. It made the MOBA portable with League of Legends: Wild Rift, which is known for being successful in its release.

The company later expanded to a new gaming format and genre with its global hit action-shooter PvP, VALORANT, known for taking over the world during its release. It also gained massive popularity during the COVID-19 pandemic when many gamers popularized its streams and was later speculated to expand to other gaming platforms

In 2021, Riot introduced a development called Project L, which focuses on  Street Fighter or Tekken-style gameplay, featuring renowned Champions from its most famous game. Apparently, Riot is still not satisfied with one fighting game to introduce, with the latest report unveiling a Super Smash Bros.-style platform game featuring League of Legends, but it has now been ultimately canceled.
