Leaks and rumors are now growing about Cupertino's next-generation smartphone, with Apple said to be equipping the entire iPhone 16 lineup with its A18 chips, the latest from the company. After the massive confusion since the iPhone 14 lineup, Apple had two different sets of chips for the iPhone 15, focusing on the A16 Bionic and the A17 Pro.
The iPhone 16 lineup will return to normality as Apple will only deploy the A18 chips for it, and the new report suggests that there will be no Pro variant.
Apple A18 Chips Will Power the Entire iPhone 16 Lineup
The latest discovery came from Nicolás Alvarez and was initially reported by MacRumors, with the data miner claiming that a new code discovered from Apple confirms new chips coming for the entire iPhone 16 lineup. There would be four models under the iPhone 16 that will arrive later this year, with it speculated for yet again another Fall event launch.
Five iPhone identifiers were seen from Apple's codes: the iPhone 17,1, iPhone 17,2, iPhone 17,3, iPhone 17,4, and iPhone 17,5.
All devices have the same identifiers, which suggests that each device would have similar chips, including the next-in-line processor, the A18 Bionic.
What to Expect from the iPhone 16 Lineup This Year?
While four of those models pertain to the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and the iPhone 16 Pro Max, a lone device was reportedly getting the same A18 chip. It is speculated by MacRumors to be possibly the iPhone SE's return, with this being the fourth-generation budget smartphone from Apple that missed out for several years, soon to be revealed and with the A18 chipset.
Apple's iPhone Lineup and Its Past Chips
The entire confusion started with the A16 Bionic chipset, the one equipped for 2022's iPhone 14 lineup, which saw mid-reviews from its users but one that is capable of delivering its top features. This is because reports claim that it used the same GPU as the A15 Bionic before, the one available on the iPhone 13 series, with its other components, which Apple upgraded.
Beliefs are that Apple will fix this fiasco in the next releases, but that was not entirely the case for the current-gen smartphones, as its base models, the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, both used the A16 chips again. However, it was a different story for the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, which got the upgraded version with the A17 Pro.
For reasons unknown, Apple did not give the base iPhone 15 models the A17 Bionic but went above and beyond for the Pro models, which got their dedicated A17 Pro chips. The next iPhone 16 lineup will see a new chipset with the A18 chips, entirely skipping the A17 Bionic. The latest leak reveals that this is already indicated on the code base and is confirmed for the next ones.
