In an incredible turn of events, a Rocket-Firing Boba Fett toy has broken records as the world's most valuable old toy, selling for over half a million dollars at auction. This Star Wars collectible surpassed all expectations, fetching $525,000 and doubling the previous record set in June 2022.
Star Wars Collectible Becomes the World's Most Valuable Old Toy
The Rocket-Firing Boba Fett toy, a highly sought-after Star Wars collectible, was recently sold at auction for over half a million dollars. It's not surprising that it sold for such a high price since it's a perfect-condition Kenner Boba Fett action figure.
This figure is known for its rare "rocket-firing" feature, which was never released because it was deemed a choking hazard. This Boba Fett figure fetched an astounding $525,000 at a recent auction.
According to a Heritage Auctions press release, its price more than doubled the previous record of $236,000, also for a rocket-firing Boba Fett in June 2022. Gizmodo reported that this latest sale included one of only two surviving hand-painted prototypes in 1979.
The figure exists today because an employee of toy company Kenner saved it from a box of discarded toys intended for employees to take home. The Heritage's May 31 Star Wars Signature Auction raised $1,661,916, with over 1,500 bidders worldwide. The auction's two highest-selling items were Boba Fett figures.
One of these was a highly graded, still-sealed action figure released by Kenner in 1979 on what's referred to as a "21 Back B Star Wars Card," which sold for $84,375. Only one other Boba Fett figure with this AFA 95 grade is known to exist.
Previous Record Holders
On March 16, 2022, Hake's Auctions set a previous world record by selling a rare Boba Fett action figure for $204,435, making it the most expensive Star Wars action figure ever sold.
Kovels reported that this 3-3/4-inch rocket-firing prototype is AFA-graded, encapsulated, and fully painted, marking the final development stage for this highly sought-after collectible. The previous record for a Star Wars action figure was $185,850, which Hake's also achieved in November 2019.
This prototype never made it to production and was showcased just once at the 1979 Toy Fair in New York City. It gained further attention when it was featured on an episode of the popular History Channel show "Pawn Stars."
Heritage Auctions also highlighted that this small Mandalorian action figure had beaten a Barbie doll to become the most valuable vintage toy ever sold at auction. A unique Barbie doll adorned with a 1-carat diamond was sold for $302,000 in 2010.
The Australian jewelry designer dedicated four weeks to crafting this doll. It features a stunning diamond collar necklace consisting of three carats of white diamonds, with a centerpiece of a one-carat emerald-cut fancy vivid pink diamond.
The auction held on October 20, 2010, at Christie's New York, donated all proceeds to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation as part of the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month initiative.
